Portraiture in the Context of History, Purpose and Being Fiction
Though portraits depict real people, the subject’s position, artist’s style, and our knowledge of the person featured influence what we see as viewers.
In this brief video, David C. Ward, a historian at the National Portrait Gallery, asks us to question if portraits are fact or fiction.
Portraiture Is A Dialogue, Projection, Fiction, Ideal Image Of A Person
Even today, photography as the “Mechanical of the Arts” relies on the photographer’s perception, style, and interpretation. And, of course, the purpose of the results. A headshot will have to look quite different from a B&W Classic Portrait or an IG-styled senior session. Yet, for all of those various objectives, there’s always a great deal of framing, composition, lighting, and directing involved.Portraiture never was and never will be just a factual depiction. It’s always been an art of interpretation. Otherwise, it would be “just” a documentary.
It’s Up To You. Decide Carefully.
You, the creator <> client’s need <> interpretation <=> Keep this in mind when starting your journey as a portrait photographer. No matter to what side you tend to be on (from “as true & pure as possible” to “illustrious artistry”), be aware that it’s within your control of what you want the results, your future style, and business pursuit to be.[molongui_author_box profile_layout="layout-7"]
