The Power of a (Commercial) Portrait
The Essence of ANY Portrait: 9 Hours Explanation Condensed to 4 Minutes
Tyler Shields works with and for celebs. For most of us, that’s either a dream or a non-goal. But by working on that level, pace, and with very different personalities, Tyler truly knows what he’s talking about.
Here’s why we deem Tyler’s video as super essential for this crash course:The lesson for you is not about big-scale shoots and the showbiz industry; it’s about the very core of any portrait: connection and “message” as the bare essence.
Any Good Portrait Is About Emotion. Big or Subtle.
You won’t work with big cinematic scenery, capturing one single “perfect” frame. But you will always have to be on the lookout to create a message/feeling/narrative by guiding your subject towards a “goal”. The simplest (and hardest) one is by bringing an emotion across. Subtle or lavish.Care for examples?
A headshot where the subject comes across as insecure or arrogant? A no-go.
A woman portrait where the subject appears to be cheeky instead of confident? A no-go.
Most of these situations occur because of a lack of communication before and during the shoot.
